10 Terrible Video Games With Awesome Openings

9. Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2

Mafia 3
Konami

After not doing all that much for a very long time with the IP, Konami finally rebooted the Castlevania series in 2010 with Lords of Shadow.

The big twist of this new reboot was that protagonist Gabriel Belmont was to become Dracula, and the player character had been the big bad of the Castlevania series all along. Whilst many fans prefer the original universe, Lords of Shadow at least had the brass to do something unique.

Its sequel definitely had similar things in mind. In the game’s stunningly good opening, we get a retelling of the events from the first game as well as a lot more. Familiar names are mentioned like Trevor and Simon Belmont, who carry on the lineage of their father Gabriel. In just this opening alone there are plenty of twists and turns, as Gabriel kills Trevor and resurrects him as Alucard.

It’s a huge lored-ump, but in a good way, widening the new reboot’s world in quick fashion and doing so very succinctly. A great voiceover over an animated storybook, it gives depth and history to this blossoming new Castlevania timeline.

Unfortunately, due to Lords of Shadow 2 being a bit of damp squib in visuals and gameplay, this cinematic as is good as it gets.
