10 Terrifying Horror Video Game Openings

9. Forbidden Siren

Forbidden Siren, Japan Studio's early 2000's horror title, sets to ape J-horror movies like The Ring and The Grudge. These were booming worldwide, so it was only natural that a game would follow suit.

The small, fictional countryside town of Hanuda has been subjected to some kind of natural disaster. But instead of relief aid and rebuilding, the townsfolk are subjected to something causing them to become hive-minded, bleed from the eyes and seemingly invulnerable.

Which isn't a great start for our revolving door of playable characters, who are armed with very little and have to survive. Right from the off, the Shibito (the undead villagers) are after you, barely giving any time to collect thoughts.

Whilst players can use their hive-mind vision trick to see where the Shibito are, it's not always a blessing. There's nothing more terrifying than sightjacking (their words, not mine) to see where the enemies are, only to spot the back of your head as one sneaks up on you.

It may look dated now, but back in 2004, this was a revolutionary way of terrifying players so early on.
