10 Terrifying Horror Video Game Openings

6. Visage

Set in the 80's, Visage starts its first person horror with a gun-based murder-suicide. That alone is terrifying to sit and watch a family be murdered, but it doesn't end there. After that initial bang (bad taste pun intended), Visage is just getting warmed up.

What follows, even as part of its opening hour, are some of the tensest moments in horror gaming. Visage likes to mess with lights and, by extension, the player's sanity. The darkness will cause you to panic and die over time, but that's not all. Aside from the random jumpscares, which are ready good at catching players out, there's also murderous spirits abound.

These don't chase you in standard fashion, mind. That'd be far too easy, players are used to that cliché by now.

Instead, those spirits are tangible, and apropos of nothing, you'll be caught and stabbed in the gut by a ghostly granny. That's not even a wacky exaggeration. Visage will literally conjure a murdering ghost old lady (amongst others) if you dally too long.

It sets the scene for one of gaming's most terrifying haunted house adventures. Trust me.
