9. The Hunter - Dead Space
Swinging more to the shock, gore and panic side of horror, Dead Space was released at a time when horror games (especially on console) appeared to be dead in the water. Taking control of the engineer Isaac Clarke, the game prided itself on doing things differently. Firstly, Clarke wasn't a soldier, so almost every weapon in the game was a re-purposed tool, from his trusty Laser Cutter to the remote controlled rotary saw blade, you had to make do with what you could find. In fact, the only "gun" you could get in the game was a Pulse Rifle which most people considered largely useless. Then there was the enemies, the parasitic monsters known as Necromorphs, which were all reanimated and heavily mutated crew members of the ill fated USG Ishimura. Because they were already dead, the game then threw out its top trump card, firing blindly at them wouldn't hurt them (they're dead after all), the only way to defeat them was to dismember them. So far, so good. It wasn't until you got to about halfway through the game that you encountered the most horrific threat to your underwear though, The Hunter; a necromorph who could regenerate his lost limbs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx-is2OzAss Yes, you could dismember him and he would just keep coming back at you, usually when there were waves of other normal enemies to deal with at the same time. Oh, and did we mention that he can kill you in one hit? His unique roar was enough to put anyone into a fit of panic.
