10 Terrifying Video Game Enemies That Gave You Nightmares

7. The Gatherers - Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Few independent PC games have had such an impact in recent years as 2010's Amnesia: The Dark Descent. A tale involving cosmic beings, memory loss, mutation and deception, Amnesia popularised the current trend of survival horror games where running and hiding is the only way to survive the game, all the while toying with the player's (and character's) sanity. Amnesia pits you against a castle full of deformed humanoids known as The Gatherers as you work your way through the game's story. These creatures feature deformed faces, bodies, claws and generally look about as appealing as a bout of dysentery. They stalk the corridors of the castle, permanently on the lookout for you and God forbid they see you as if they do, they'll chase you until you can get out of sight for a period of time and even then they'll be on alert and actively searching for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiQJdJV2Dq8 You can hide from them in the dark, but that affects your character's sanity which causes you to hallucinate and make noise, further drawing them towards you. Even looking at them for too long will eat up your sanity and will usually result in a painful, sticky death.

I am a man of many interests. I am a passionate gamer, running my own YouTube channel (The Gadget Addicts) showing off the best of modern gaming in the form of Let's Play videos. I am an ardent musician, having been a guitarist for the past 13 years. I am also a massive geek, I adore science fiction and fantasy films and TV shows and am trying to work up the courage to start writing a novel. If I can ever think of a good story to tell... I live with my wife in the North East of England and own a belligerent little black cat.
