The original Resident Evil has any number of terrifying moments to chose from. The iconic part where the zombie dogs leap through the glass and start mauling Chris Redfield is rightly remembered as a stand-out (and was subtly tweaked to make sure it retained its shock value for the Gamecube remake), and there are a near-infinite amount of boss battles or just shoot outs against regular enemies that get the blood pumping. Let's not even get started on the true horror that is the voice acting... For the most terrifying moment in video game history, though, you need only look at your first encounter with the principal antagonist of the Resident Evil franchise: the zombie. Having made it into the relative safety of the Umbrella Mansion where the majority of the game takes place, players walk through their first opening door loading screen, the only sound as they round a corner being their accompanying footsteps. Then there's a stab of synth, a guttural moan, and your first member of the undead starts chasing you. Funnily enough, the scene is mirrored with one in The Evil Within - also directed by Shinji Mikami - and rest assured, time has not made this reveal any less terrifying. If anything, with the addition of next-gen graphics and some professional performances, it's gotten a whole lot worse.
