10 Terrifyingly Dark Implications In Otherwise Cheerful Video Games
5. You Trap Countless People In Paintings For Eternity - Luigi's Mansion
To put things as plainly as possible, in Luigi's Mansion you fight against King Boo, who has evilly trapped your brother in a portrait. In order to save them, you... trap the enemies you fight in portraits. Wait, what?
Well, in your exploits, you gain the use of the Ghost Portrificationizer, which lets you put ghosts you've captured into paintings. It's shown as a helpful way for you to keep check of who you have and haven't caught, and very little else is said about it - which is wild, because King Boo doing the exact same to living people is shown as the height of villainy.
These ghosts did get in your way, sure, but many of them appear to have at least once been human, and so condemning them to a fate of forever staring out from a painting seems pretty awful on your part - even if they were initially in them when you got there.
At the end of your adventures, Mario is freed from his painting, and - if you're a loyal completionist - all the portrait ghosts are returned to their place, despite them all definitely, definitely being sentient.
