10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Final Fantasy VII

6. It's Set On A Version Of Earth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTc9sLmOR0A As is the case with most Japanese series, Final Fantasy is released in it's home nation months before the rest of the world. This can actually work against Japanese fans though; by the time the game arrives in America or Europe, Square have usually added more content or balanced certain issues that arose post-launch. Final Fantasy VII was no different; the American and European releases were quite different from the original Japanese release. Several story scenes were added and areas of the game were re-balanced to make the game more difficult (usually by adding in a boss). One change might have gone unnoticed by some players though as it involved a move used by the final boss, Safer Sephiroth. In the Japanese release, Super Nova was a fairly weak move with a short animation. For the Global release, the animation was drastically lengthened, showing a comet coming into the Milky Way and annihilating several planets before arriving at Final Fantasy VII's world to hit the party. It's insane. While it's interesting to wonder how the party survived a hit that can destroy Pluto, it's also interesting to ponder on what this means for the game's setting. After all, Final Fantasy VII never explicitly states that it is set on a version of Earth (or in Earth's Solar System); the world of Final Fantasy VII is mostly referred to as 'The Planet'. In all honesty, Super Nova's crazy animation is simply for dramatic effect and the real-life planets were used to not alienate the player. Still though, it's crazy to think that one day we could all sport big spiky hairdos and wield stupidly-sized swords.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
