10 Things Star Wars Games ALWAYS Get Wrong
2. Emperor Palpatine
Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine is arguably one of the most powerful Sith Lords in the history of the dark order.
A master manipulator, spy, double-agent, and the man not even Yoda could defeat, Darth Sidious was brazen enough to work alongside the Jedi for years without a single member suspecting his true nature until he chose to reveal himself (stop it) to Anakin.
In video games, however, you can bet your last Republic Credit that Sidious will be portrayed in one of two specific ways.
In cutscenes, the Emperor will be seated in his throne-like chair, maybe via hologram, providing exposition in a fifty-death-sticks-a-day voice.
In gameplay (Battlefront 2 for example), he is a hooded cattle prod, shooting lightning from his hands in three second bursts, before he runs out of the Force (obviously).
Whilst not entirely disingenuous having been portrayed like this at points in the movies, developers could do so much more with a Sith as powerful as Sidious.
Why not make use of his lightsaber?
Why not have him, as Chancellor Palpatine, manipulate and threaten others to fulfil his will via Witcher or Skyrim-esque conversation choices?
The man who brought down the Jedi Order and turned the Chosen One to the dark side deserves better.
