Wireless technology is far from a new idea, but it's important to remember that until just the last decade, the idea was little more than a pipe dream. What wireless options there were in gaming back in the day were often spotty at best.

This meant that you were dealing with cords for absolutely everything. While the mess of cables that populated the back of the average entertainment centre back then was enough to fuel the nightmares of a dystopian sci-fi author, where this really became a burden is with console controllers. Having to be tethered to your machine necessitated some pretty inconvenient playing positions, and no doubt ruined more than a few eyeballs by forcing players to get uncomfortably close to their televisions.

The release of the Nintendo Wavebird in 2002 would signal a new era of wireless gaming, but before then your gaming was dictated by a mess of cumbersome cords.
