Let's say that you've just heard about this tremendous new RPG that is apparently 'going to revolutionize the way we think of video games'. You save your money to buy it, you go to the store and the very confused person behind the counter tells you that they've never heard of this game and doubt they will ever receive it.

The idea of hearing about a game, wanting it, having the money to buy it and being simply unable to was just the reality of the industry at one time. Given that purchasing something was limited to physical stores and that many people weren't blessed with being close to an abundance of those in the first place, there were many times that you would just never be able to find a copy of anything you wanted.

The modern ability to purchase any game whenever the need strikes you is perhaps the greatest thing to ever happen to video games.
