We live in a pretty special time for video game innovation. Thanks to the indie scene and sites like Kickstarter, ideas that would have never made it to the market just 10 years ago are now shooting up the sales charts and inspiring new ways of approaching game design.
While there were always innovators in the video game market, the fact of the matter is that a company had to be much more confident their game was going to be a major market hit, for it to stand a chance of even getting released. What this meant, was that you had a lot more sequels to smash hit games or a lot of games trying to copy other successful titles as closely as possible - but just to a degree where lawyers wouldn't get involved.
You may not like certain directions the mainstream video game industry is heading, but at least today you can be sure there are far more options out there.
