10 Things You Didn’t Know About Video Game UI
4. Fonts, Localisation & Legibility
Okay, this is the trickiest bit to sell, because fonts aren’t very sexy (unless you count New Helvetica, Oo-boy, that’s some hot stuff), but fonts become not just a necessity, but a passion when you get into UI.
And that’s because of a number of reasons - for starters, you just spent weeks working on a clean, legible, sexy text box (I... I keep saying text stuff is sexy, I think I might need to go back to the counsellor) - and you're not letting anyone slam some 36-point Papyrus monstrosity in there.
Secondly, it’s also the responsibility of the UI specialist to think about some super-important stuff like localisation, and not every country uses the same alphabet.
So it’s up to you to check - are all the characters in your chosen font set supported in Cyrillic? Have you considered the increased character size when looking at Hirigana and Kanji (because your sentences might fit into that text box in the ROMAN alphabet, but that doesn’t mean it’ll fit when characters are double the width)?
Oh, and it goes without saying but... Comic Sans is for 1997, and Boomer Minions meme content. Nothing else.
