10 Things You Didn't Know About Red Dead Redemption
8. The Lasso Mechanic Could Only Work On Next-Gen Systems
The general feeling when creating Red Dead Redemption was that the dev team didn't just want to create another Western game, they wanted to create the Western game. Predecessor Red Dead Revolver was a solid enough experience, but the technical limitations of the previous generation meant that it could only ever crudely recreate iconic elements of Wild West media.
With Red Dead Redemption being made for next-gen systems though, the developers finally had the ability to truly realise every part of the Western landscape, from the characters to the vistas to the true-to-life detail on the wild horses.
One example that illuminates just how important the jump in technology was comes in regards to the lasso. Though the idea of stringing people up or capturing horses seems like child's play now, the developers explained that at the time it was a technical breakthrough, and a true next-gen feature.
So, with something as small as that mechanic demanding so much attention, you can imagine how much of a feat RDR was on the whole.
