10 Times Changing Protagonists Killed Video Games
4. Prince Of Persia (2008)
Before there was Assassin's Creed, there was Prince Of Persia. Best known for the Ubisoft-developed trilogy from the mid-2000s, these titles were applauded for their challenging platforming and enthralling narrative.
After the trilogy concluded with The Two Thrones, Ubisoft released a follow-up that was simply titled Prince Of Persia. While fans of the acclaimed trilogy were hoping to reunite with the eponymous prince to continue their story, Ubisoft had other plans.
This Prince Of Persia was a reboot of the series that took place in a different timeline. Not only was this title not connected to the previous trilogy, but the protagonist was also a completely different version of the character.
Rather than being a heroic prince, this new hero was an unnamed, wisecracking treasure hunter who lacked any sort of character arc throughout the course of the game. With Nolan North providing the voice, Ubisoft seemed more interested in turning this character into their version of Nathan Drake than building upon the series that players became invested in.
Although the reboot enjoyed modest commercial success, it remains a black sheep amongst fans. Ubisoft's decision to return to the original timeline with 2010's The Forgotten Sands suggests that they were unimpressed with its reception.
