10 Times Changing Protagonists Killed Video Games
5. Watch Dogs: Legion (2020)
Giving players the ability to hack the world around them, Watch Dogs was one of Ubisoft's more exciting releases. The series only got better with the sequel. Not only were there more ways to hack, but the plot was more interesting and the new protagonist, Marcus, was a vast improvement over the comparatively lifeless Aiden.
It seemed like the series had finally found its footing. However, all the positive changes that were made would be undone with Watch Dogs: Legion.
Set in a near-future London, the game follows hacker group DedSec's fight to stop the city from becoming a surveillance state. The main difference this time was there was no central protagonist. Instead, players recruited civilians, each with their own skills, who they'd then be able to play as during missions.
Although this core mechanic added a clever roguelike element to gameplay, the lack of a central protagonist meant that there wasn't anyone for players to connect with. The plot that was there felt impersonal and hollow as a result. Legion's version of London may have looked impressive, but the game didn't have the substance to match.
Legion failed to resonate with players, with rumours suggesting that Ubisoft has cancelled the series entirely.
