Did we mention how cool Solid Snake was, and is? For any gamer growing up in the 90's he instantly became the beacon of action-hero love, contained and delivered specifically through video games. He was ours, a character who could hang with the Stallones and Schwarzeneggers of this world but who had enough self-assured cocksure swagger to resurrect Little Richard. Part and parcel of establishing this persona was David Hayter's voice work; a performance that right away we knew we'd be impersonating on school yards the world-over. It was just the right amount of gravel, low-tone delivery and self-assured discipline, you felt like the goddamn hero when playing as Snake, and he said all the right things at all the right moments. So what does Kojima do? He doesn't ask the guy back again for the newer games. Worse still he doesn't even tell him why he hasn't been brought back, and instead hires Hollywood A-Lister Kiefer Sutherland to come in and do his best, breathless 'Snake voice'. The result? An absolute shambles, Kiefer sounds like he's constantly on his way out the recording booth, and there's no Hayter to speak of whatsoever. If the rumours are true that all of this is to set up the return of Solid and have Kiefer voicing Big Boss opposite Hayter, that'll be unbelievable, but after so many hours and so much money thrown at the series from fans, we'd sure appreciate a little heads-up.
