The original Mass Effect trilogy centres on a space navy soldier named Commander Shepard, whose mission is to protect the galaxy from a race of powerful mechanical beings known as the Reapers and their agents. The first game was released in 2007, featuring Shepard facing off against Savarin and his benefactor, a Reaper named Sovereign. The Reapers purpose is to exterminate all life that has reached a certain technological level. The second and third games in the series focus on the build-up to and the outbreak of war.

The trilogy features many Star Trek references throughout the games, including several voice actors from the franchise appearing in supporting roles. Marina Sirtis, Armin Shimerman, Fred Tatasciore and Dwight Schultz, among others, appeared in the first game, with Michael Dorn voicing a Krogan soldier in the second game.

In fact, there is a confrontation between Commander Shepard and a Krogan soldier which sees the two surrounded by a crumbling ruin. Shepard warns the Krogan that they will be crushed by the falling debris, to which the Krogan replies 'Yes! Exhilarating, isn't it?'

The exchange is lifted wholesale from the stand-off between Admiral James T. Kirk and the Klingon Commander Kruge, as they stand on the imploding Genesis planet, in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. This is among many other nods to Star Trek in the series.
