10 Times Video Game Adverts Lied (And It Was The BEST)

Wow, the trailer didn't show that!

Let's play two truths and a lie! All you have to do is identify which statement is false: Bethesda's games are full of bugs, horror games are scary, and video game adverts always tell the truth. Well, if you've read the title of this list (which you likely have) then you know that last one is about as real as the Easter Bunny.

The job of a video game ad is to lure players in and convince them to buy a product. As such, they often aim to show off a game's most impressive features and elements in a bite-sized package.

With this in mind, most companies want to cram as much stuff in as possible, giving potential consumers a full taste of what to expect. Still, not all gaming ads are created equal, as there are plenty that withhold information or even straight up lie to keep you on your toes.

Now, dishonest video game trailers and promotional materials are often mired in controversy as they tend to feel like false advertising (looking at you, Killzone 2). However these ads did the complete opposite, as their dishonest nature improved the overall experience of the games they advertised.

10. Elden Ring

Has the internet talked to death about how amazing Elden Ring is? Yes! Will it stop anytime soon? No! So here's yet another reason why it is a masterpiece, and it comes less from the game and more how it was sold to us.

The marketing for Elden Ring gave the industry a familiar taste, as it looked just like something you would expect FromSoft to produce. A cryptic narrative? Check! Difficult boss fights? Check! Detail-rich areas? Check! It was all there. However, one major difference was the reveal that the game would be open world.

Gamers were keen to see what this legendary company's approach to open world gaming would be. However, the marketing material refused to give them a taste, focusing on the traditional staples of Soulsborne games instead. As such, it was easy to assume the open world elements would be far less game-changing than expected.

Then, of course, Elden Ring dropped, and players were amazed by how intensely it switched up the formula. Exploring the Lands Between was an unbeatable gaming experience, and leading players into it with little idea of what they'd really be getting was an inspired move by FromSoft.
