4. Candy Cane Door – Saints Row IV

Metal Gear Solid 2 Raiden

If there’s one modern franchise whose entire ethos revolves around messing with players, it’s Saints Row. Although the series’ playfulness is usually amusing and inobtrusive, the candy cane door from Saints Row IV was nothing short of infinitely aggravating.

Included within the How The Saints Saved Christmas expansion, the Candy Cane door is – as you might expect – a door blocked by a giant candy cane. In order to open it, the player is prompted to “mash [console-specific button] to lick candy cane,” with all sorts of suggestive sounds emanating from your mouth as the screen initially assures you that you’re “almost there!”

Over the next several minutes, said prompt admits to lying “about being almost there” before continuously heckling you for persevering due to enjoying the sex sounds, hating candy canes, and having nothing better to do. Meanwhile, the progress bar fills up as slowly as possible.

The icing on the cake? There is no reward for finally devouring the candy canes (well, aside from the Minty Fresh achievement). Instead, your character defeatedly comments, “Ah, refreshing. Oh, it’s locked.”

Touché, Saints Row IV.
