10 Times Video Games FORCED You To Lose (And Punished You For It)

FromSoftware games aren’t known for their mercy, but the first, Dark Souls, really takes the sadist’s cake for being the only title among the studio’s releases that forces the player to die in order to progress through the game.

During your first encounter with Seath the Scaless, a dragon acting as one of the game’s main bosses, it’s actually impossible to kill him, even though entering his chamber initiates a regular boss fight.

Your only options are to leave through the fog wall (it’s the one in the game that allows you to do that, but of course, Dark Souls would never let you know that) or stay and fight until you inevitably die.

The reason why the fight is rigged is because the game uses your death to open a secret passage in the chamber that leads to an actual fight with Seath. But if you think this would mean that the developers would be kind enough to make an exception and let you keep your souls after suffering your "scripted" death, think again!

It's Dark Souls! Of course, they don't let you keep the souls!
