Halo has always been a game of skill. Regardless of whether you’re up against other players or AI-controlled aliens, your accuracy and proper use of the weapons at hand determine whether you’ll make it out of the encounter victorious or dead.

Halo: Reach is no different in this regard, except for one particular instance where the odds are stacked against you no matter what—the final mission of its single-player campaign.

The ending to Halo: Reach puts your Spartan, Noble Six, in a hopeless battle against an endless horde of aliens. The mission spawns progressively larger groups of enemies to fight, and no matter how good you are at the game, your skill cannot help you, as the longer you play, the tougher the enemies get, and eventually their sheer number will overwhelm you.

The mission is supposed to be your final stand, which is why there is no way to win. The developers didn’t even prepare a fake-out ending for those who'd be able to survive their onslaught for a considerable amount of time.

You’re forced to lose, and you’re punished for it by having to watch your favorite super soldier die to a bunch of cheating bots.
