When Batman returned to the AAA gaming scene in 2009, it set the standard for every superhero title to follow. After two superb entries with Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, the franchise was given to WB Games Montreal for its third entry. The result was Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel set in the early days of Batman's career.

Recasting the Joker was one of many major challenges WB Montreal tackled when attempting to live up to Rocksteady's efforts. While there was no official report on the reasoning behind the change, it was likely down to the game's setting.

The iconic performance from Mark Hamill was changed to Troy Baker to capture a younger sounding Joker for the prequel. There were certainly some massive expectations considering how brilliant Asylum and City were. Thanks to his strong experience in the voice acting scene, Baker was admirably close.

What Origins did do was create a palpable rivalry between the Caped Crusader and the Clown Prince of Crime; thanks to some strong writing and psychedelic sequences involving the villain, Troy Baker made the most of the material. While some players may have preferred a Batman game without the Joker for a change, Origins still made an impact.
