10 Times Video Games Totally Broke Your Trust

6. Terrorist Attack - Papers, Please

Resident Evil 3
Lucas Pope

Papers, Please is a fun indie game about the not-so-fun profession of a border control officer. While the game has plenty of unexpected moments, the majority of your time with it is spent settling into the mundane routine of checking people’s passports. For this reason, when all of a sudden your post is attacked by terrorists, it really puts you on edge and makes you distrust every other person that crosses the checkpoint.

And this event happens on Day 2 of your work! While you’re busy taking care of your duties at the border, a random sprite in the crowd lining up at the checkpoint will run towards the border fence, climb it, and then detonate a bomb before the guards manage to shoot them.

The attack perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the game. Whereas on your first day, you might have thought that your new cushy government job is easy street, by the end of your second day, you understand that nothing is certain and that you will have to look out for more than just faulty passports if you want to keep your family (and yourself) safe.
