I’m not the usual hater of all things new and shiny - I actually really enjoy seeing how developers take unique hardware selling points in interesting and novel (after all, if you don’t use the unique selling points of the hardware, you may as well just be playing a nondescript PC box).

However, StarFox Zero was one of those instances where the core gameplay was gimped in order to make the gamepad functionality work, and as a result, most gamers - even the most ardent furry fanboys - found the two-screen format to be more of a nuisance than an innovation.

Yet, there was still some genuine gamepad-based fun to be found when you picked up StarFox Zero in the form of StarFox Guard, a tower defense-style game with some clever screen implementation (the main screen would show an array of surveillance footage, but the gamepad showed a birds-eye view).

Some review outlets noted that this far more modest game was simply more fun (and therefore, worth owning more) than the main event, which was almost certainly a factor in Nintendo deciding to sell StarFox Guard separately mere months later.
