Now for something completely different, we know a AAA studio riddled with talent and manpower can make an open world feel like a rich playground but this particular open world was designed and programmed by just one person.

Okay, so it kind of checks out that it would be small in that case, but it’s also really cleverly designed.

Much like many of the game creators on this list, A Short Hike creator Adam Robinson-Yu went in with the ethos of quality over quantity, both for the length of the game and the size of the map. Your role is pretty simple, you’re an anthropomorphic bird who needs phone reception from the peak of the mountain. You’ll also wander around exploring the pretty game world, collecting items, meeting other animals, fishing, and taking on side quests among other things. It’s sort of a tiny Breath of the Wild and for lack of a better description the vibes are just immaculate.

In short: times are tough, go play volleyball on the beach with your bird friends.
