First released in 2006, Gears Of War introduced players to muscular protagonist Marcus Fenix and his equally beefy comrades in Delta Squad as they fought back against the invading Locust horde. Tearing through waves of the monstrous enemies with hails of bullets and gun-mounted chainsaws while roadie-running between cover made for a satisfyingly gory and fast-paced action game that was sprinkled with elements of horror.

While the Gears' formula is well-known today and is still as fun to play as ever, with prequel E-Day being one of the most anticipated upcoming releases, the initial trailer painted this acclaimed shooter in a slightly different light.

Helmed by Top Gun: Maverick and F1 director Joseph Kosinski and created entirely within the game's Unreal Engine 3, this trailer showed Marcus fleeing from Locusts through a decimated cityscape. Set to Gary Jules' melancholic rendition of "Mad World", this trailer implied that Gears would be a sombre and isolating outing. While the series contains hard-hitting moments, they weren't as emotionally impactful as this cinematic suggested.

An updated version of this trailer that focused on the action-heavy gameplay was released for Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition, finally giving players a more accurate depiction of this classic shooter.
