3. Red Dwarf - Back To Reality
Red Dwarf used video games as a jumping off point for an episode several times, but Back to Reality was probably the weirdest occurrence.
Back to Reality has frequently been praised as one of the cult sci-fi show’s best, and revolves around the crew waking up after a crash to ‘discover’ that the last four years of their lives have been spent playing a total immersion game, and that all the time they’ve spent together has been false.
We see the characters inhibiting strange, surreal identities, and none of them are happy about the reality given to them. It’s a brilliant episode which manages to give new depth to these characters while still committing to the episode’s plot in a creative and compelling way.
Despite not being your typical Red Dwarf episode, it’s easy to see why this one is so beloved.
Other video game episodes include Better Than Life, where they play through an immersive game which grants them their deepest wishes, only for Rimmer to see manifestations of his deepest fears.
As well as that, Gunmen Of The Apocalypse sees the crew as Wild West gunslingers tracking down the source of the malfunction in Kryten’s nightmare caused by a computer virus.
