10 Underrated PVP Modes In Video Games
7. Tekken 3 & Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (Wii) - Tekken Ball Mode
Tekken 3, for many, remains the pinnacle of PlayStation 1 fighting games. The series had firmly established itself as a force to be reckoned with its two previous entries, but Tekken 3 was a phenomenal sequel.
With its enormous roster and robust range of play modes, it was a formidable package indeed. Many fantastic series newcomers were added with this title, as were some distinctly quirky modes like Tekken Force (a sort of scrolling beat ‘em up affair) and Tekken Ball.
In Tekken Ball, the combatants are separated from each by means of a net, and so can’t reach each other for the usual brand of pugilism. Instead, on Gon’s beach stage, a deadly match of beach volleyball plays out.
The players must strike the ball with attacks to send it flying at their opponent. If struck by it, they’ll take damage. It’s simple and chaotic, but crucially, there’s more to it than there may appear at first.
Different types of ball can be selected, causing various degrees of damage. There's not a lot a strategic nuance, but the closing seconds of any bout are as intense as any standard fight.
