10 Unique Video Game Difficulty Modes That Will Break You
8. Metro 2033 - Ranger Mode
The Metro
series has earned something of a cult status within gaming. Its bleak visuals,
morality based story and more realistic, weighted feel has won the hearts of many. Its
emphasis on stealth, resource management, and environment allows it to live in
something of a genre-limbo, being equal part first-person shooter and survival
horror.
Ranger Mode comes in the form both of Easy and Hardcore, both of which heighten bullet damage to almost one-hit kill status, making enemies and the player extremely potent death dealers but equally as fragile.
Ranger Mode Easy gives the player some wiggle room in that you have more health than enemies, being to withstand three to four gunshots without going down. Ranger Mode Hardcore does not offer such luxuries.
RM Hardcore makes human enemy engagements an incredibly dangerous proposition, encouraging a ninja-like approach where possible and to only enter fights you know you can win. The HUD is completely removed, the max amount of each bullet type you can carry reduced by half, and the player is restricted to carrying two weapons.
On the plus side, they give you a higher throwing knife capacity. Swings and roundabouts.
