10 Upcoming Games That Have Already Made One HUGE Mistake
6. The Always-Online Requirement - Skate
Fans of the hit extreme sports franchise Skate were elated when EA finally confirmed that a fourth entry was on the way, all the more so with key personnel from the previous games being involved.
That joy was rather short-lived, though, with many eyebrows being raised once EA confirmed that the game would ultimately be a free-to-play live service title, and then later revealing that, no, Skate will not be playable offline at all.
While a skating game set within a massively multiplayer sandbox sounds great, the total lack of an offline mode is infuriating, ensuring the game is completely unplayable if your Internet goes down, there are service issues, or as is inevitable, EA stops supporting it sometime down the line.
This certainly doesn't mean that Skate will be a flop or not a fun time, but knowing that there's no way for it to exist long-term without being tethered to EA's servers is frustrating to say the least.
Beyond optimistically hoping that EA might release an offline mode for the game when it's retired one day, it'll otherwise fall to modders to figure it out, which they shouldn't have to.
