10 Upcoming PS5 & Xbox Series X Open-World Games You Need To Know About
5. Dead Island 2
It's been twelve years since the first entry in the Dead Island series and, honestly, gamers have been far too starved of these over-the-top, quirky, zombie-slaying titles. Thankfully, after all sorts of troubles languishing in development hell, Dead Island 2 is finally arriving in 2023.
Technically the fourth entry in the franchise, the Dambuster Studios game will take place a couple of months after the events of Dead Island 1, ditching the tropical surrounds of Banoi for Los Angeles.
After a wait of nine years in development that has seen the game switch hands numerous times, Dead Island 2 looks like the perfect sequel, marrying the feel of the first game with a number of new unique features that will help it stand on its own merit.
The iconic landmarks across LA are suitably gored up and flooded with larger-than-life characters, the Rage and crafting features will return, though the combat mechanics have been replaced to give the game a much more arcadey 'beat 'em up' vibe.
Though it's not a seamless open world, the game does feature interconnected 'districts' that are fully explorable, and stitch together a huge LA environment.
Whatever form it comes in, to even have a Dead Island game coming out in 2023 is a huge achievement and one plenty are sure to have some fun with.
