When you are the first new intellectual property developed by one of gaming's most beloved companies in a quarter of a century, you're in a good position to be one of the hottest releases of the year.

First announced back in 2018, this space-themed open-world RPG is set in the year 2310 and will whisk players off to The Settled Systems and the uneasy truce between the United Colonies and Freestar Collective. Aside from being the first new IP from the same guys that brought us Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, Starfield has also made a splash online for being an Xbox exclusive.

Sony have been the kings of exclusive games for arguably over a decade now, so this represents a rare and welcome win for all the next-gen Xbox owners out there.

And of course, no piece of Bethesda news would be complete without the obligatory Skyrim reference, with Todd Howard labelling the game: 'Skyrim in space'.

Memes aside, Bethesda know what they're doing when it comes to making an open world that can keep players enthralled for years, and they have had more than enough re-releases of Skyrim to know how the appetites for open-world games have evolved over the years.

We've been burned by next-gen open-world space games plenty of times in the past but, in the case of Starfield, Bethesda should know what they're doing.
