Jaws were collectively dropped as last year's E3 when Nintendo revealed the first teaser trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.

Zelda's prominent role in the trailer prompted many fans to consider the possibility of the campaign featuring either co-op functionality or an expanded role for the character.

This was compounded by a blink-and-you'll-miss-it glimpse of Link's arm being consumed by a glowing green force, which some fans surmised may debilitate Link in some way which requires players to take over, even if temporarily, as Zelda.

But this is likely a bit of an intentional bait-and-switch on Nintendo's part, who want to distract players from the more probable truth that the glow will in fact be imbuing Link with a new ability altogether.

The sleuths at Polygon discovered scrapped concept art from Breath of the Wild where one of Link's arms was missing and turned into an interchangeable appendage which could become a bow, a lasso, a hammer, and various other weapons and items.

As such, it's not a huge leap to consider that Nintendo decided to include the idea in their sequel. And so, this could either be Link's arm transforming for the very first time, or Link simply receiving a nifty upgrade to his arm.

Between this and Nintendo's hilariously non-committal stance on both co-op and playable Zelda, it's the far more likely of the explanations for the glowing arm.
