After the success of Alien: Isolation, Creative Team got the thumbs up to work on a new sci-fi IP called Hyenas. The online multiplayer shooter followed a batch of astro-pirates who plunder spaceships while travelling between Earth and Mars.

Even though it's ballsy to pour money at a new brand, Sega seemed confident in Hyenas, since it was the company's most expensive game ever. (Yes, it cost more than Shenmue.)

However, Sega was unhappy with Hyenas' alpha tests, causing them to take a more hands-on approach, creating a tense environment for the creators. According to one developer, Hyenas was never going to end well, since the development suffered from a -

"Total lack of direction, many of the leadership asleep at the wheel but they never seem to lose their jobs. An engine change, part way through the process. Attempting to break into a saturated market, and not committing to do anything adventurous with the game."

On top of that, a premium game didn't stand a chance against free-to-play titles. Even when Hyenas was switched to a free model, Sega knew their product couldn't compete with similar titles like Fortnite and PUBG: Battlegrounds.

Despite spending six years in development, Sega said bye-bye to Hyenas for good.
