Even though NieR started off as a spin-off of Drakengard, the success of NieR Automata proved this offshoot had more potential than the original series. As such, Square released a NieR remake and a mobile follow-up called NieR Reincarnation, which was designed to be more accessible to new players.

Reincarnation received mixed reviews, but still managed 15 million downloads a mere two months after its worldwide release. Because of this, Square decided to greenlight another entry for iOS and Android, this time overseen by Tencent. Since Tencent has many heavy hitters under its belt like League of Legends and has a mobile version of Elden Ring in the works, NieR appeared to be in safe hands.

Unfortunately, Tencent realised the franchise rights for NieR weren't cost effective in the long run, encouraging them to cancel the project entirely.

Of course, die-hard fans shouldn't be too concerned. NieR still remains a hot commodity, so its future shouldn't be in any real danger. Although we should see another entry should on mainstream consoles, a mobile version isn't going to be happening any time soon.
