10 Utterly Terrifying Underwater Video Game Creatures

4. Vortex Queen - Ecco The Dolphin

It was supposed to be a fun game playing as a dolphin and then the aliens had to kidnap all the living creatures in Ecco's home.

To be fair, the overall feel of the game, even though you play as a dolphin, is off putting. The music isn't an expected cheerful melodic explosion of fun. In fact, it's more reminiscent of a horror film, building tension as the player swims through each level trying to find out what happened to their pod.

The final level of the game involves Ecco the dolphin entering a giant tube to reach the planet of the Vortex. Drones attack, but these aren't the true horror waiting for Ecco. That dubious honor goes to the Vortex Queen, a giant head from H. R. Giger's nightmares. Somehow this charming game of a dolphin has turned into an Alien spin-off.

Not to mention she's too large to fully fit on the screen and as you fight her, Ecco knocks her jaw off. Oh, and she makes a terrifying hissing sound the entire fight.

The box art for the game gives nothing away about this final fight and many children were scarred for life when the true culprits of the game were revealed.
