If you are among the ten people who never experienced Guitar Hero, this is how it works. Players needed to strum the Gibson SG-shaped controller's five coloured buttons in time with the on-screen notes to rack up points.

It may sound like a simple premise, but Guitar Hero went on to reshape the gaming industry, purely because of this peripheral. It made billions, spawned two dozen sequels, and let a whole generation of gamers feel like rock stars. The sequels expanded on the peripherals by adding microphones and drums, which drew in more music enthusiasts.

The franchise didn't just influence the gaming world but the music industry. By the time Guitar Hero III came out, Taylor Guitar Centre noticed a 27% increase in guitar sales.

Because it attracted rock legends like Slash and Ozzy Osbourne, it felt like Guitar Hero would never go out of style.

But by the late noughties, the gaming community collectively went, "Well, that was fun. What other games are there?" Although there was a time where the developers of Guitar Hero were tripping over money, key creator, RedOctane, shut down in 2010, while Neversoft followed suit four years later.

Rarely in the history of gaming has a product enraptured the entire industry so suddenly, before disappearing just as abruptly.
