10 Video Game Achievements That Were Designed To Make You Feel Bad

They knew EXACTLY what you'd do...

Achievements and trophies have been an exciting addition to the gaming world, offering additional longevity to many titles and giving players fun new ways to test their skills. Some are just handed out for finishing levels or playing the game to completion, but others provide genuinely difficult and rewarding challenges.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a hardcore hunter or not, we’ve all earned a couple of achievements over the years that we’re proud to show off to our friends. Whether you got them for winning a bunch of online matches in your favourite fighting game or beating every boss in Dark Souls, these awards really make you feel like you earned something.

Then, there are the dud achievements, the ones designed purely to make you look stupid or to ‘reward’ you for failing at the game or doing something silly. These were the times when developers decided to have a little giggle at our expense, and even dedicated achievement hunters prefer not to unlock them.

An achievement is meant to be a permanent badge of honour on your online gaming profiles, but most players would prefer to wipe these ones out if they had the chance.

10. Toroko Wins! (Cave Story)

In the excellent 8-bit-style adventure Cave Story, one of the achievements is earned by being killed by one of the weakest characters in the game: Toroko. One of the game's cute, Rabbit-style creatures known as Mimiga, Toroko can be found in one of the buildings in the Mimiga Village, discovered at the start of the game.

Toroko is armed with a stick and only does 1 damage to your health per attack. Still, if you happened to stumble across her while in a weakened state, it's possible to fall victim to her frantic strikes.

Otherwise, to 'earn' the achievement, you have to stand around without attacking and let her gradually whittle your health bar down, one point at a time.

Given all the tough enemies you encounter and all the different ways you can die in Cave Story, being killed by Toroko is definitely one of the most embarrassing ways to get a Game Over, especially as you only need to shoot her once to defeat her.
