Fire Emblem: Three Houses released in 2019 and quickly became one of the most revered entries in the decades-old franchise. It's a game that offers so many customisation options and gameplay freedoms to go along with its stellar story and fantastic character development.

With three distinctive houses, the Golden Deer, Blue Lions and Black Eagles, there are multiple narrative routes that the player can embark on. Each playthrough can take north of 50 hours to finish, so when the game offers three different paths it's all the more impressive.

One thing is constant through all choices, though. Edelgard, the leader of the Black Eagles, is a quiet and reserved character with a shockingly ruthless personality. Players are introduced to the Flame Emperor early on, and their villainy can be seen just from the way they look. When the Flame Emperor is unmasked and it turns out to be Edelgard, it's a shocking revelation.

The betrayal comes out of nowhere, not only because of the way the narrative unfolds, but also because of the impact it has on one of the specific paths. It's proof that each of the choices of house don't just offer subtle differences, which is all the more exciting.
