10 Video Game Bosses Genuinely IMPOSSIBLE Without A Guide
5. Dante - Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne
In the world of ultra hard RPGs for super nerds who give a game a -1/10 if it doesn't spank them raw, Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne stands tall as the god king of punishing difficulty. And nowhere is that better exemplified than in the secret boss fight, Dante. And before you ask, yes, this is where that meme you're all thinking of came from.
Playing Nocturne, and this fight in particular, is the closest we're likely to get for a long time to knowing what it feels like for a computer to want you DEAD, because the way that the game's RNG ties into its trademark "press-turn" system means that a fight that's a breeze on one playthrough, will kill you 50 times in a row in the next, and there's very little you can do about it.
Dante might let you get a million wallops in and get yourself nice and prepared before he pulls out his big attacks, or he might use that big attack ONLY on you seven times in a row. And like all Atlus RPGs, you dying means immediate game over.
But a guide can at least tell you what monsters to recruit, what items to have, what level to be at before even trying, and how to account for a few of the multiple ways this fight can play out. Which - for this game - is about as much help as you can ask for.
