2. Fatman - Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty
Metal Gear Solid has always been a series that tries to blend po-faced drama with silly, memorable moments. It’s amazing what the eccentricity of Hideo Kojima did for the series. In particular, the boss battles have always been incredible spectacles.
Some were incredibly poignant, some were just darn tough, while others were utterly ridiculous. You can guess which category Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty’s encounter with Fatman falls into.
The fight isn’t funny in the same way many on this list are, but the whole situation is hilariously absurd. Here we have a dangerous villain with a penchant for explosives, determined to be remembered as a master of his destructive craft.
He plants bombs around the small arena, which Raiden must hurriedly defuse before they go off. Despite the threat, it’s just impossible to take Fatman remotely seriously, as he barrels around on rollerblades drinking fine wine through a straw.
There’s a tragic, hilarious beauty in the way he falls, too. A hilarious encounter from start to finish.
