10 Video Game Bosses Who Kill You For Being Too Good
Better skills mean worse punishments!
Scripted losses are one of the most hated video game clichés. The game puts you in an unwinnable fight so that when you lose, it can show how awesome and powerful its big bad boss is.
The thing is, despite how much video games like to stack the odds against you in such situations, some of these unwinnable bosses can be defeated. Well, actually, no, the game will still make you lose, but it will do so in a unique way.
Yes, some video game bosses come with special failsafes that make you lose even when you are too good for them. You might be able to defeat them, but they will counter it with a special cutscene where they defeat you or a secret finishing move that instantly kills you when you get too close to killing them.
These moments can be frustrating, but at the same time, they're a sign the developers anticipated someone could be skilled enough to overcome their scripted trap and needed a special tramp card to deal with them.
The following losses happen only when you're too good at fighting bosses. If you die in this way, know that it's actually because the game feared your superior skills!
10. General Beatrix - Final Fantasy IX
General Beatrix is a powerful member of the all-female army of the kingdom of Alexandria from Final Fantasy IX and a recurring boss that you have to fight multiple times throughout the game.
Although you have to fight her a lot, and she even joins your party temporarily, all of the boss fights with Beatrix are actually unwinnable. The general will always prove to be too strong for your party and completely destroy them with her obnoxiously high stats.
But hey! You might try to grind before fighting her and boost your characters to the point where they would be able to match Beatrix's strength. If that's the case, then surely, you should be able to defeat her, right?
Well, no. It turns out that even if you can go head-to-head with Beatrix, the warrior has a special last resort attack that she can use to instantly wipe out your entire party.
The ability cannot be avoided, and it always happens when the game notices you're getting a little too close to lowering Beatrix's health, meaning that even when you're the best Final Fantasy player, there's no beating Beatrix.
The general has something far better than plot armor—a plot superweapon!
