Hi-Fi Rush, the 2023 rhythm action game from Tango Gameworks, has quite a bit of fondness for fourth wall breaking. The game does it in several situations as a tongue-in-cheek explanation of something happening out of order or the player messing with the plot too much.

In fact, one fourth wall break happens specifically to undermine your victory that wasn’t meant to happen.

In Track 3 of the game, your character Chai has to fight a special robot equipped with Z-Shielding. Because the shield can only be removed by another character you haven’t met yet, Macaron, you’re meant to lose the fight, to give Macaron a reason to join your party.

This said, after you beat the game once, you unlock a special New Game Plus mode that unlocks all of your companions right away. This means that you can use Macaron’s ability before you actually get to meet him in the story and beat the robot prematurely.

Unfortunately, because your victory here breaks the game’s narrative, the fight still ends with the same defeat cutscene. The only difference is that developers give you a small meta comment praising your skills and apologizing for having to take your win away.

Well, at least they acknowledge it!
