10 Video Game Character Redesigns The Fans Actually Liked

3. Lara Croft

Eidos & Crystal Dynamics

The Tomb Raider reboot was a breath of fresh air, offering a whole new aesthetic and more gritty action, with the melodramatic treasure hunt angle kept in there too.

Although some of the narrative arcs and villains didn’t go down an storm, Lara’s new design won almost universal acclaim.

Lara had slowly been ‘deflated’ since her triangular bra debut, but she still looked very much like a comic book character. She had a sense of being cool in the ‘90s, and the whole thing felt a little outdated. Immediately after Tomb Raider: Underworld in 2008, Crystal Dynamics got to work on a hard reboot, which released five years later.

With that came a realistic Lara Croft, one fans took to almost instantly. It helped that the death sequences were far more gruesome than they had been before, further selling the idea of a new, more mature Lara Croft.

It’s strange then that the same team who designed Lara are the ones behind the new trailer for Marvel’s Avengers, which has received heavy criticism for its blocky character designs.

Hopefully their promise to take another crack at it will result in something more in the Lara Croft frame this time around.
