5. Red Dead Redemption - John Marston
Red Dead Redemption follows the story of an ex-outlaw called John Marston.
Two government officials, Ross and Fordham, are so desperate to take down Marston's old gang, they kidnap his wife, Abigail, and son, Jack, and order Marston to kill the gang members. If he accomplishes his mission, Marston will be granted amnesty, allowing him to live in peace with his family.
Marston unwillingly tracks down each of his former comrades and kills them all one-by-one. Despite fulfilling his side of the deal, Ross and Fordham send a platoon of officers and soldiers to slaughter Marston. After he helps his family escape, the government's men blast Marston to pieces.
Abigail dies three years later, leaving Marston's son, Jack, all on his own. Still consumed with rage after the government double-crossed his father, Jack tracks down Ross and puts a bullet in his skull.
Marston did everything in his power to ensure his son never experienced a life of violence like the one he was forced to live. Ironically, it was Marston's noble death which caused Jack to continue his father's cycle of violence.
