10 Video Game Characters Who MASSIVELY Changed Before Release
7. Zagreus Was Based On A Different Myth - Hades
With the recent release of Hades II and the overwhelmingly positive response to it, it's clear that the roguelike has become a big franchise in the video game industry.
However, one may ask if this kind of success would be possible if the original plan for Zagreus and his escape from Hades had never been changed.
You see, in the early concept of the game, Zagreus wasn't really Zagreus at all! The game's protagonist was actually supposed to be Theseus, the Greek hero who defeated the minotaur, and his goal was to find the way out of the bovine labyrinth from his myth.
The idea was ultimately dropped as to the idea of a puzzle-filled labyrinth proved too confusing to navigate (who would've thought?). Theseus was switched for a more original idea of Hades's son Zagreus, and his prison became his father's domain in the Underworld.
Considering how iconic Zagreus and other occupants of the afterlife are, the switch was clearly a good idea. After all, the final fight with Hades wouldn't feel nearly as epic if instead of the literal god of death you were going to fight an angry cow man.
