10 Video Game Characters Who Used The Fourth Wall Against You
2. Flowey - Undertale (2015)
Undertale wages all-out war on the Fourth Wall right from the outset. Almost everything in this game is designed to rewrite all you think you know about the medium, and if you don't emerge from the experience with a whole new outlook on video game storytelling, you must have been playing blindfolded.
The majority of these deconstructions come from Flowey, the game's main antagonist. As soon as he makes his "kill or be killed" intentions known, his cryptic dialogue suggests that the sinister sunflower knows far more than he lets on. Far more than he should know.
For instance, when facing the motherly character Toriel, the game's controls and setup aren't all that familiar to the player, and it's incredibly easy to kill her by accident just by trying to figure out what to do. If you're going for a good ending, you'll want to quit and reload your last save in order to spare her this fate.
But your actions haven't been completely undone. Flowey remembers. Flowey knows what you did.
To call you out on a section of gameplay that technically shouldn't exist anymore is more than a little shock for the player. And that's just one of the many instances of Flowey's meta game meddling.
