10 Video Game Characters You Didn't Realise Suffered Tragic Fates
1. Navi - The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
And our final entry has a bit of a meta bent to it, because we're talking about the infamously annoying yet ultimately well-meaning companion from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Navi.
"Hey! Listen!," she'll needily shout at Link to players' intense frustration, and while serving as Link's trusty navigator throughout the game, she ends up flying away at the end.
The sequel, Majora's Mask, begins with Link setting off to find Navi, though she ultimately never resurfaces and her only appearance in another Zelda game is in the non-canon spin-off Hyrule Warriors.
Fans have been speculating for almost 25 years on what exactly happened to Navi, with many coming to believe that she simply died after compelting her purposeful mission in Ocarina of Time.
This would explain why she flew away from Link at the end of the game, why he never found her, and why she's never materialised in any other canon Zelda game.
Even if you cling to the hope that Navi is out there, alive, somewhere, there's another way to look at her fate - the real reason we've probably never seen her since is the intense fan vitriol directed at her ever since Ocarina of Time's release.
In reality Nintendo quietly "disappeared" Navi, but without definitively killing her she's left in a sort of mortal limbo in fans' memories - she's neither dead nor really alive. Schrödinger's Navi, if you like. And really, isn't that the most tragic fate of all?
