10 Video Game Characters You Didn't Take Seriously (Until They Killed You)

9. Brock (Pokémon Yellow)

Pokémon Red & Blue's first gym leader Brock is called Brock because he likes to use a big rock. It's for that reason that, for two thirds of Kanto's original generation of budding trainers, he's a complete pushover. Both the honcho of Pewter City Gym's Pokémon are drastically exposed by grass and water starters Bulbasaur and Squirtle, making it surprisingly easy to fold over this boulder.

In the animé inspired mid-quel Pokémon Yellow, it's a different story. Because the tardy player, having overslept Prof. Oak's induction, is lumped with a Pikachu as a starter - an electric type - they're placed at an instant and hitherto unexperienced disadvantage.

No longer is Brock a crock, but legitimately lives up to his name in toughness. Unlike the cartoon, there are no sprinklers for stupid Ash to cheat his way to victory with here; instead, the very first boss demands actual tactics to overcome. Stone cold, man.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
